Unlocking Content / Security Settings

Blank screen

Occasionally, you may find that certain content or files will not open within Canvas, or will open on one computer but not another, or in one browser but not another. This may be due to the large variation in security settings in different browsers and on different computers.

If the content won't open--you just see a gray or white page within a frame--this is most likely due to a browser setting on your computer. There are a couple of things you can try.

Firefox - Look for an icon that looks like a red Lego in the upper left at the beginning of the URL. It may also display a message like this:  Blocked Adobe Flash notification

Click Activate to allow the plugin to open the content. You should then see the red Lego disappear and the content opens.

If you get the following message when you attempt to play a video in Firefox inside of Canvas, click the bottom sentence in the black area; the red Lego will go away and the video will play.

Activate Adobe Flash plugin

Chrome - Look for the green padlock in the upper left at the beginning of the URL:  green padlock icon

Click on the green padlock to make sure the type of content you are trying to view is allowed.

green padlock information

If that's not the problem, look on the far right side of the URL bar for an icon shaped like a shield. Click it once, and click Load unsafe script

Load unsafe script shield

You will then see the green padlock change to gray and red, and the content will appear.

Internet Explorer - IE notifies you at the bottom of the screen when it is feeling insecure:

Internet Explorer only secure content is displayed notification

Just click Show all content, and the page should open.

Depending on whether you are using your own computer, a public computer, or an Alamo Colleges computer, you may or may not be able to adjust the overall security settings in IE:

Click the "gear" icon in the upper right corner.

Internet Explorer gear

Click Internet options. Click the Security tab. Then click Sites.

Internet Explorer Internet Options Security tab

In the box, type alamo.instructure.com and click Add, then Close.

add alamo.instructure.com to trusted sites

In all browsers, if the problem is due to Java settings, you will probably receive a prompt letting you know that your Java needs to be updated or adjusted. Click here Links to an external site. to learn how to enable or adjust Java.

Finally,  in all browsers, make sure your pop-up blocker settings allow all pages to open.  For help with that, please click here .

If none of these steps solve your problem, please call 210-485-0555 for 24/7 help.
