Four Types of Classes

With so many options for types of classes, it's easy to get confused. Here are quick definitions of each of the four main types offered by the Alamo Colleges and NVC:

Four Types of Learning

Face-to-Face (on campus) classes

These are traditional classes that take place on campus in the physical classroom.

Remote (Zoom) classes

Remote classes are similar to on-campus classes because they are "synchronous"--everyone meets at the same scheduled time. However, instruction takes place from remote locations using Zoom or a similar tool.

Online (internet/distance learning) classes

Online classes, sometimes called internet, distance education, or distance learning, are "asynchronous." The students and instructor are in different physical locations, and they do not meet at the same time. Usually, all or most course content, assignments, and activities will take place within Canvas.

Hybrid (blended) classes

Some classes combine two or three of the methods above; a portion of the class meets on campus and the rest takes place remotely or online.
