How it Works

Instructors can use New Quizzes to build assessments with several item types that measure student competency in a variety of subjects. Assessments can be modified using various assessment settings and aligned to outcomes at the assessment or question level. New Quizzes also includes assessment reports for admins and instructors to view student performance, including mastery of learning outcomes.

  Classic Quizzes

  • Classic Quizzes are indicated with a hollow (or empty) rocket ship icon [  ]
  • The Quiz is a tool native to the course
  • All Quiz settings/questions are added and managed within the quiz tool at the course-level
  • Moderation and Reports are accessed and managed separately from the quiz (but still within the course)

  New Quizzes

  • New Quizzes are indicated with a solid (or filled-in) rocket ship icon ]
  • The Assessment is an LTI (i.e., an app or external tool) that appears within the Canvas course for students
  • Assessment is added to the course as a graded (or non-graded) assignment where the overall settings can be managed. Assignment settings include:
    • Title
    • Points
    • Assignment Group
    • Display Grade as
    • Assign to (due/availability dates)
  • Quiz instructions, questions, and internal quiz settings are “built” into the assessment through the app. Internal quiz settings include:
    • Shuffle questions/answers
    • Display one question at a time
    • Require a student access code
    • Set a time limit
    • Filter IP addresses
    • Allow an on-screen calculator (basic or scientific)
    • Allow multiple attempts (including a “waiting period” for subsequent attempts)
    • Restrict student result/correct answer view
  • Moderation/Grading and Reports are internal to the quiz, appearing on separate tabs within the app

Question/Item Types

In New Quizzes, there are more question types to choose from, including Categorization, Hot Spot, Ordering, and Stimulus. Stimulus type questions allow you to provide a piece of content such as text, table, hyperlink, image, or media and attach one or more questions that associate with the stimulus content. Essay and Multiple Choice question types have received design enhancements, and the Fill in the Blank question type has also been improved to make the learner experience easier to navigate from a touchscreen or touchpad device.

Question/Item Banks

Item Banks (or question banks) are linked to your Canvas account so they are available to you from any course that you teach in Canvas. You can create Item Banks by adding assessment questions directly to a bank or by importing QTI formatted content.

Item Banks can also be shared with other Canvas users that hold an Teacher, TA, or Admin role. (See the next tab for more information about sharing New Quizzes.)

 Classic Quizzes

  • Question Bank serves as a repository for questions to populate quizzes
  • Created at the course-level and bookmarked for use across multiple courses
  • Edits to questions in a bank won't automatically update quizzes that are already using those questions, so questions have to be updated in both the bank and the quizzes where it was used

  New Quizzes

  • Item Bank resides outside of Course, linked to the Instructor’s Canvas account
  • Edits to questions can be made in one location and feed to all courses where it is used
  • Edited questions in active quizzes will only appear to students who haven’t attempted the assessment, but it will display for subsequent attempts
  • Tag, Search, and Filter for questions and item types

Sharing with Instructors

Instructors can share both Assessments and Item Banks created in New Quizzes with other Canvas users. Sharing an Assessment with questions tied to an Item Bank provides the other instructor "Read Only" access to the question, while sharing an item bank allows other users to view, edit, and use questions from the item bank.

 Classic Quizzes

  • Instructor can Send a copy of the Quiz to another instructor
  • Instructor could add another instructor to their shell to copy/import quiz materials (not advised for live classes)
  • Create a Course Copy, Commons Import, or Quiz Export to share

 New Quizzes

  •  Instructor can Share an Item Bank with other instructors to collaborate on questions (i.e., view, edit, and use) or restrict to just viewing the questions/content
  • Instructor can also "send" Assessments with questions linked to an Item Bank where a receiver cannot edit banked items
  • Receiving instructor can change the assignment point value (e.g., value the quiz at 50 points instead of 100) to meet the grading scale for their course

Student Accommodations

Accommodations can be established for all assessments in a course for a student through the Moderation tab of any quiz. Accommodations settings include giving extra time, removing time limits, or multiplying time limits by a set multiplier such as time and a half (or 1.5).

 Classic Quizzes

  • Instructor calculates and adds extra time to each individual Quiz in a course for a student with an accommodation

 New Quizzes

  • Instructor adds extra time to an Assessment for a student with an accommodation which Canvas can multiply for you such as time and a half
  • Apply it to just one or all Assessments in the course
  • Print (or save as a PDF) a Quiz, Sample Answer Key, or Student’s Responses
  • Assessments can be Duplicated in the Quizzes tab
