Prescreen audition videos, instructions for all instruments
- Due Feb 5, 2021 by 11:59pm
- Points 100
- Available until Feb 5, 2021 at 11:59pm
If you haven't already done so, first contact Dr. Cartwright to enroll in the auditions. She'll add your ACES email address to the audition roster so that you have full access to the application and all resources in Canvas.
Prepare your prescreen video before submitting your audition form! In the audition modules, sheet-music and play-along tracks are provided for three audition tunes for each instrument group (voices, horns and melodic instruments, chordal instruments, and bass & percussion). You are required to choose two of the three tunes and record home videos of yourself performing each, accompanied by the play-along tracks provided. Each song must be submitted as a separate video. You will be assessed on the quality of your performance, not the quality of the video itself. Therefore, you do not need professional recording equipment; a recording made with the built in mic and camera of a smart phone will be fine. See the rubric for evaluation criteria. Contact Dr. Cartwright if you have any questions.
Audition Requirements
- Download the required sheet-music and play-along audio files for your instrument from the module.
- Record your audition video using a cell phone. Do not use any external mics or edit your video in any way.
- Each performance of each song must contain the following:
-
- An "in head," performed accurately
- At least one improvised solo chorus
- Rhythm section players (piano, guitar, bass, drums, etc.) should comp all remaining choruses
- An "out head," with coda or ending as indicated on the sheet-music
-
- Fill out the online A-JAM application form, and include links to your two required YouTube unlisted videos (see instructions below).
- You must record each part of your audition video in one continuous take. Performances of the required pieces cannot be stitched together from multiple takes. You will record separate audition pieces in individual videos. Auditions containing edited performance takes will be discarded.
Instructions
Make sure that at the beginning of the video you:
- State your name and instrument clearly

Set up your video on YouTube as an unlisted video Links to an external site.. An unlisted video is a different type of private video. "Unlisted" means that only people who know the link to the video can view it. This is what we prefer.
You can choose to make any of your uploads unlisted in your YouTube Account settings. Here’s how:
-
Sign into your YouTube Account
-
Go to your My Videos page
-
Select the video which you’d like to make an unlisted video. Click the “Edit” button to access the video’s settings.
-
Go to the Privacy section of the page. There you’ll see the option to mark your video as “unlisted,” “public,” or “private.” Select unlisted.
-
Don’t forget to click the “Save Changes” button. Once you’ve done this your video will be an unlisted video.
Please test the link before you submit it. You can log out of YouTube and send the link to a second email address you may have or to a family member to test.
Be sure to include links to your two required YouTube unlisted videos on your A-JAM application.
