Getting Started

Skype is a free program that allows people to communicate via chat, audio or video conferencing in real "live" time.

To use Skype, you need:

  1. The Skype program installed on your computer. Skype download page Links to an external site.
  2. To have Skype installed on a work computer, please contact NVC ITS Help Desk at 210-486-4777, or log into ACES, Employee tab, and find Footprints in the right column (about halfway down). Fill out a Footprints request for installation.
  3. A webcam.
  4. Your computer may already have a webcam installed. If not, contact Teaching with Technology at 210-486-4795 to receive a free webcam to be used from work or home.
  5. The person you plan to Skype with needs the same things: the program and a webcam.
  6. You will each create a username, add each other to your Contact lists, and then initiate chat, audio, or video sessions.
