Already have professional experience in digital media? You may be able to receive college credit for prior learning gained through professional work experience. Credit is based on what you have learned and can demonstrate, not simply the number of years you have worked in the field.

Digital Media Experiential Learning Requests

Within the Digital Media program, experiential learning credit through professional work experience is considered for IMED courses only.

Students interested in receiving credit should first contact the Digital Media Program Coordinator. The Program Coordinator will review the student's experience and determine whether it may be appropriate for evaluation toward a specific IMED course.

Professional experience does not automatically qualify a student for course credit.

Your experience must demonstrate college-level knowledge and skills that align with the learning outcomes of the specific IMED course for which credit is being requested.

How to Get Started

Identify the IMED course that you believe matches your professional experience.

Your experience should align with the learning outcomes of a specific IMED course—not simply the general subject area.

Contact the Digital Media Program Coordinator.

Provide the IMED course number you would like considered and a brief description of your relevant professional experience.

Meet with the Digital Media Program Coordinator to begin the evaluation process.

If your professional experience appears appropriate for evaluation toward the requested IMED course, the Program Coordinator will complete the required paperwork with you and explain the documentation you will need to provide.

This may include documentation from your current or previous employer on company letterhead describing your job responsibilities, the work you performed, and the skills you used. The Program Coordinator may also request additional evidence needed to demonstrate that your experience meets the learning outcomes of the course.

Additional evidence may include:

Professional work samples or portfolio pieces
Examples of projects completed as part of your employment
Documentation of relevant job responsibilities
Industry certifications, licenses, or credentials
Documentation of professional or technical training
Other materials that demonstrate mastery of the course learning outcomes

The type of evidence required will depend on the specific IMED course and the professional experience being evaluated.

Important: Work experience alone does not guarantee college credit. Students must provide sufficient evidence demonstrating that their prior professional learning meets the learning outcomes and academic expectations of the requested IMED course. Final approval is subject to applicable college and district requirements.
