Quick Facts
The OTC is an asynchronous/online training with one synchronous component: the final course presentation.
Certification is not required to teach remote or face-to-face synchronous courses.
Online certification is a four-step process. Completion of all four steps is required:
- Step One: Training and Course Build– This training focuses on acceptable standards of course design and best practices for teaching in the online environment. It will introduce specific tools that facilitate those standards and best practices.
Participants will also build a significant portion of an online course sandbox, which includes a complete orientation and at least two full modules. The course also covers best pedagogical practices and teaching techniques that promote a successful online classroom environment - Step Two: Initial Course Review– The online course built by each participant will be reviewed by the OTC Co-Facilitators for adherence to the training elements and QualityMatters (QM) standards and federal, state, and local requirements.
- Step Three: Revisions & Approval- Faculty Participants make suggested edits to their course based on the feedback from the OTC Co-Facilitators.
- Step Four: Presentation & Certification–In order to be fully certified to teach online, an instructor must complete the OTC course, demonstrate competence using the current Learning Management System, create a course with elements defined in the OTC, and present a well-designed course to a review committee.
Canvas proficiency is required before attempting the OTC. If you want to enroll in Canvas 101 NVC Faculty, please email, Mallory Plummer at: mplummer4@alamo.edu
The OTC has four due dates and must be completed within a 8-16 week period (one semester). *Participants who do not meet the 1st Due Date are removed from the training.
Failure to complete all four certification steps by the final deadline will require re-enrollment in the OTC during a subsequent semester.
Securing a Faculty Mentor is required. Their role is to provide guidance and monitor completion of each task within the OTC. Faculty Mentors are responsible for grading each task and for marking those items as "Complete." The Faculty Mentor must be someone who is already online-certified.
