Updates to New Quizzes
As Canvas developers roll out additional features and improved functionality for New Quizzes, the facilitators for this course will list any updates in the following change log. Check back monthly to see when desired features and functionality are added to this tool.

Stimulus Orientation | Allows instructors to choose the direction of related questions in the Stimulus question type to appear below the stimulus content instead of to the right (default setting). "Bulk" Migration (BETA ONLY) |
In late December, “bulk” migration to New Quizzes will be available to migrate multiple quizzes during the course copy or importing process. When using one of those options, you may choose to have all the quizzes and question banks migrate to New Quizzes. This functionality is being released to the Beta environment only which resets every Saturday. Canvas will announce at a later date when they plan to release this feature to Production. |

Matching Questions Partial Credit |
Matching questions will include the option to select partial credit, similar to the Multiple Answer questions. Partial credit will become the default option for this question type on all newly created matching questions. This change allows instructors to award partial points for partially correct matching questions through auto grading. |

Item Bank Filtering Terminology Adjustment |
In New Quizzes item banks, the All My Banks and All My Course Banks filters have been replaced as the All Banks and Banks Shared to Course filters. Additionally, the This Course filter has been added to the filter options. |

"This Course" Item Bank Filter |
In New Quizzes item banks, the This Course filter has been added to filter options which displays existing item banks within the current course. The This Course filter will be the default selection when navigating to Item Banks from within a course. |

Fill in the Blank Item Type Allows Rich Content Editor (RCE) |
Instructors can add content as part of the question stem and make portions of the content fillable in the student response. With this change, you can now create fill-in-the-blank questions with rich content such as scientific or mathematical formulas or a table. Additionally, instructors can format fill-in-the-blank questions to appear on separate, distinct lines. |

New Quizzes with Essays will Appear in Instructor's "To Do" List |
In the dashboard and Course Home page, instructors can view New Quizzes submissions requiring manual grading (essay or short answer) in the "To Do" List. This change allows instructors to view student submissions of New Quizzes as soon as a student submits a quiz that requires any manual grading. |

Pending Grade Icon for New Quizzes Submissions that Require Manual Grading |
For New Quizzes assessments that require manual grading for essay or short answer items, students will see an updated icon for any New Quizzes submissions pending grades. The final grade for the quiz will not display in the gradebook until the instructor has graded the item. |

New Quizzes Enforcement Postponed |
As Canvas product developers continue to add functionality to New Quizzes, Instructure announced they have removed the June 30, 2024 deadline for institutions to transition to the new quiz engine. Alamo Colleges District IT has chosen to postpone our internal Fall 2023 enforcement date, and a new timeline will be announced at a later time. Instructors can continue to use Classic Quizzes if they choose. |

Allow Clearing Selection of Multiple Choice Question Answers |
In the New Quizzes settings, instructors can enable "Allow Clearing Selection (Multiple Choice)" allowing students to clear multiple choice answers. When enabled, it allows students to unselect answers for later review or leave the question unanswered. |

Fill in the Blank with Multiple Word Bank Improvements |
When building a Fill in the Blank question with multiple word bank choices, distractor words display in a separate section for instructors. Also, word choices can be used more than once when "Allow Word Bank Choices to be Reused" is selected and duplicate answer choices are graded correctly. Additionally, for students, Fill in the Blank questions with multiple word banks display all word bank choices in the answer blank drop-down menu. |

Grade by Question in SpeedGrader |
SpeedGrader supports grading one question at a time in New Quizzes. When in "Grade by Question" mode, the question navigation bar is available and the "Update score" button has been updated. Additionally, hyperlinks have been added to questions requiring manual grading, improving efficiency for instructors when grading. |

Share Item Bank to Current Course Checkbox |
When creating a new item bank in the New Quizzes Build page, instructors can share the bank to the current course. This change reduces extra steps to share an Item Bank and improves instructor workflows when building New Quizzes. |

Additional Quick Links for SpeedGrader |
SpeedGrader quick links are added to the Options menu for assessments found in the Quizzes and Assignments index pages as well as Module items. When in the Build page of a New Quiz, instructors can view the SpeedGrader quick link in the Options menu as well as from the Moderate page of a New Quiz. This update improves accessibility to SpeedGrader from various areas within Canvas. |

Rich Content Editor (RCE) in New Quizzes |
The Rich Content Editor (RCE) is available in New Quizzes, but with some known issues Links to an external site. that may require the instructor to re-add course links, images, media, or documents. This update provides instructors the ability to utilize the accessibility checker on questions and instructions, add media recordings within New Quizzes, and change the view between HTML editor and classic view for advanced users. Users can also access the full Math Editor. Students will also be able to record audio and video within the RCE of a New Quiz. |

Zero-Point New Quiz in Gradebook Checkbox |
Instructors can choose not to display a column in the Gradebook or student page when creating a zero-point practice New Quiz. This change allows instructors to remove unwanted content in the gradebook and prevent confusion for students related to zero-point practice quizzes. |

Bulk Migration |
Classic quizzes content, including question banks, can migrate to New Quizzes. This change allows instructors to migrate multiple classic quizzes with all their content into the new quiz engine. NOTE: Surveys are not supported in New Quizzes and are never included in migrations. |

Build on Last Attempt |
Instructors can allow students to build on their last attempt of a quiz by reattempting incorrectly answered questions. When enabled, students can only view questions marked with incorrect answers, all other questions are hidden. Students who get all questions correct will not have the option to reattempt. |

Improved Item Analysis Report |
Instructor access to Item Analysis reports is faster and the user interface is updated. (Previously it could take up to 48 hours for data to display in New Quizzes reports.) After a report is generated, the report card displays data from the last run report. Clicking "View Report" to view report details, or to run a new report, click the "Generate Report" link. |

QTI File Exporting Available |
Instructors can export New Quizzes from the Build page, and the new Export Page, allowing you to keep course content and use it in other LMS instances. When a question from an item bank is used and then a QTI export is created, the item ban is included in the export. |

Locked Quiz Details |
When viewing New Quizzes that are locked and not yet available, the due date, points, number of questions, and the availability dates will display for students. This update provides students access to limited quiz details. |

Duplicate Item Banks |
Instructors can duplicate Item Banks which can allow them to edit questions without affecting the original content. This will allow instructors the ability to share Item Banks with other instructors and allowing them to make modifications that will not impact the original. When an Item Bank is duplicated, it will have the same title as the original bank in addition to the word "Copy." |

Item Bank Display Update |
In the Items Banks index page, bank details now display in a table view. This update improves efficiency when searching for a desired Item Bank and allows instructors to sort in ascending and descending order by clicking the arrow icon in a column. |

Item Banks Shared in Course Copy |
When a course is copied that includes a New Quiz with an Item Bank, the Item Bank is shared with the new course automatically with read privileges to the new course. This update improves instructor workflow by automatically sharing an Item Bank to a copy of a course without the need to take the additional step to share the Item Bank. |

Anonymous Grading |
When Anonymous Grading is enabled for a course in the course Settings > Feature Options tab, instructors can set up Anonymous Grading for a New Quiz to reduce the perception of bias in the classroom. |

Answer Frequency Summary for Question Types |
In the Item Analysis Report, the Answer Frequency Summary charts display the total number of correct responses, incorrect responses, and no responses for the following question types: Categorization, Matching, Ordering, Hot Spot, and Formula. This update provides additional question types for instructors to evaluate student responses and patterns in order to provide appropriate intervention. Practice Quiz Migration |
Classic Quizzes' practice quizzes are migrated to New Quizzes with zero-point quiz settings enabled by default. This functionality enables instructors to swiftly and effortlessly transfer practice quizzes, eliminating the need for manual "Points" updates to each individual quiz. |

Quiz and Item Analysis CSV Download |
A CSV format of the Quiz and Item Analysis report can be downloaded, encompassing all metrics and Answer Frequency Summary tables accessible through the Reports tab. This functionality allows admins and instructors to easily download data via CSV for a comprehensive look at quiz effectiveness. It also provides the data needed to create custom reports and support learning outcomes. |

Raw Points and Percentages on the Moderate Page |
On the New Quizzes Moderate page, a configure icon is added allowing instructors to switch between percentages and raw points in the score display column. This "Configure" icon displays next to the title of the Score column and improves reporting flexibility and grading system alignment. |

View Log Question Position |

Export New Quizzes Using Common Cartridge |

Two Minute Alert for Students |
A two-minute warning now appears near the end of a timed quiz session for students. In addition to the standard 30-second warning before a timed quiz ends, this feature gives students an earlier alert as the deadline approaches, helping them stay aware of the remaining time to complete their quiz. |

Add Time to Existing Quiz Sessions |
While a New Quiz attempt is ongoing, instructors can moderate a quiz and extend the time allotted for the quiz. Additionally, the student course-level accommodation modal link is moved to the Student column. (Previously this was linked in the Accommodations column.) This feature allows instructors to accommodate students who may need extra time due to various circumstances by providing additional time during an active quiz session. |

Student Analysis Report Available |
In New Quizzes, a Student Analysis Report is available. Instructors can view this report by exporting the CSV file. This feature provides instructors with clearing insights into students' grasp of course materials and concepts, enabling them to better support students in improving comprehension and test-taking strategies. Question Bank Migration on Course Copy |
Instructors can migrate Classic Quiz question banks to New Quiz item banks by using the "Convert content to New Quizzes" checkbox, previously labeled "Import existing quizzes on the Course Copy" and "Import Course Content" pages. This update allows Instructors to transfer question bank content from Classic Quizzes to New Quizzes without using quiz migration, greatly improving efficiency and saving valuable time. NOTE: After the copy or import is complete, all question banks converted to item banks will appear on the Item Banks page of the new course, filtered under "This Course." |
