Canvas Tutorials

Canvas is the Learning Management System (LMS) the Alamo Colleges uses. This page features videos and links to step-by-step guides on how to use the most important tools of Canvas. This page is intended to be an introduction or a friendly reminder of these tools. If you would like more in-depth training on these tools and teaching contact the IIC and they can set up a one-on-one session.

Canvas Overview

In this video, you will learn about the Canvas Dashboard, sidebar, Global Navigation menu, and course interface.

Organize the Canvas Dashboard

This video demonstrates how you can organize your Canvas dashboard - give your courses a nickname, change the color, rearrange the course cards, and pick and choose the courses you want to display on the dashboard.

How to Display a course on the Dashboard

Step 1

Click on Courses on the left Navigation bar

Using Discussions Redesign to provide an enhanced experience for course discussions. When enabled in your course, Discussions Redesign displays for all discussions and all users in your course.

Discussions Redesign is currently a beta feature. Some discussion settings and features in the classic Discussions interface may not function or be available in Discussions Redesign.

Canvas Gradebook

Canvas SpeedGrader and Docviewer

The SpeedGrader™ allows you to view different types of assignment submissions in one place, make text and audio comments to students, and grade using different methods, such as rubrics. DocViewer is a tool integrated within SpeedGrader to help instructors annotate and provide additional feedback.

What Can you do with SpeedGrader?

Providing rich feedback to students can enhance student engagement and learning. The SpeedGrader™ has several places where instructors can offer feedback:

  • Post a grade directly to the grade book.
  • View and use the rubric (if the assignment has a rubric attached).
  • Add general comments that can start back-and-forth discussions around the assignment.
  • Provide students with written, video, and audio commentary.
  • Include additional attachments.
  • Download the original submission.
