Master Teacher Certification Program

Established in the Fall of 1998, the Master Teacher Certification Program is designed to provide quality learning experiences for new and experienced faculty members to actively engage in reflective and creative exercises and dialogues to enhance teacher effectiveness and student success. It offers faculty opportunities to form communities across disciplines that encourage and facilitate innovative approaches to a student-centered classroom.  The program promotes diversity, while encompassing a collaborative and cooperative approach that can be applied to all disciplines, learning styles, and student populations. Currently, there are over 200 faculty members who are Master Teacher Certified.

The program includes the following topics that are covered in a hybrid format with an online course and several face-to-face meetings.

  • Creating a Community of Learners
  • Strategies to Improve Student Learning
  • Active Learning Techniques
  • Assessment Strategies
  • Teaching with Technology
  • Applying Best Practices

Each topic is covered within a module in a Canvas course and has defined learning objectives and tasks that provide a pathway to successful completion of each topic.  The content within each module includes articles, presentations, videos, discussions, and assignments. The online Canvas course is designed to align with the face-to-face meetings. The meetings are hands-on, interactive, and engaging and they require completion of the corresponding online modular unit prior to attending.

Face-to-face meetings include a required orientation session at the beginning of the program and two discussion sessions throughout the program.

Participants work in groups to develop a presentation based on a topic from Dr. Saundra McGuire's book, Teach Students How to Learn. The groups present during the first face-to-face meeting and the presentations are recorded and added to the online course. Participants also develop an individual presentation on a topic of their choice and they record their presentations. These video recordings are also added to the online course and they are discussed during the second face-to-face meeting.

The final components of the program include development of a Teaching Philosophy Statement and submission of a Reflections Report.

In April of each year, participants who have completed the program are recognized at the Master Teacher Recognition Ceremony during which they are presented with a Certificate of Completion by the college President.
