What is a Screen Reader?
Screen readers are software programs that allow blind or visually impaired users to read the text that is displayed on the computer screen with a speech synthesizer or braille display. A screen reader is the interface between the computer's operating system, its applications, and the user.
How Does it Work?
A screen reader is a software application that enables people with severe visual impairments to use a computer. Screen readers work closely with the computer's Operating System (OS) to provide information about icons, menus, dialogue boxes, files and folders.
Screen Readers and Browsers
Canvas officially supports the following screen reader and browser combinations:
- Macintosh: VoiceOver Links to an external site. (latest version for Safari)
- PC: JAWS Links to an external site. (latest version for Firefox)
- PC: NVDA Links to an external site. (latest version for Firefox)
- There is no screen reader support for Canvas in Chrome
